John Linville

M, b. say 1738, d. July 1766
FatherWilliam Linvill b. c 1708, d. a 11 Jul 1766
MotherEleanor Bryan b. s 1720, d. a 25 Jul 1794
John Linville was born say 1738 at Linville Creek, Augusta County, VA; John was old enough to be taxed in 1759, as was his younger brother, William. He also acquired property in 1761, which means he was born by 1740.
His parents were living at Linville Creek, Augusta County, VA at the time. Father William deeded 419 acres of land to son John on 20 Jan 1761, indicating that at least by that date he was 21. It is unlikely he was married or had offspring at the time of his death as this 419 acres descended to his next oldest brother, William who later sold it 1782, indicating the relationships in the deed. John served as a witness to a deed between his cousins, Morgan Bryan, Jr. and John Bryan on 22 Apr 1762 at the same time he was in court providing evidence. He appeared in court to provide evidence in a case brought by Hugh Montgomery v Walter Fenner. on 22 April 1762 at Rowan County, NC. He appeared in Inferior Court in January 1765 at Rowan County, NC, as an assignee for a Nassey on another suit and received statisfation. However, by Oct 1765 he apparently had not collected on the "satisfaction" and appeared in inferior court again to collect. This is the last known activity of John before his death at the falls the following summer. He died in July 1766 at 10 miles above Linville Falls, NC; Killed by Indians while hunting in the Appalachain Mountains with his father and others.

William Linville

M, b. say 1742, d. before 13 September 1799
FatherWilliam Linvill b. c 1708, d. a 11 Jul 1766
MotherEleanor Bryan b. s 1720, d. a 25 Jul 1794
William Linville was born say 1742 at Linville Creek, Augusta County, VA; He is the second son of William, based on information in a 1779 deed and he was old enough to have been taxed (16) with his father and older brother in 1759. Since brother John received land from their father in 1761 (age 21?), it seems likely William was born about 1741 or 2 and presumably where his parents were living at the time. He appears on the 1759 tax list for Forks of the Yadkin, Rowan County, NC, He appears with his father William and brother John. Since this is the first time the Linvilles on the west side of the Moravian settlement in the piedmont of North Carolina appears on a tax list, William Jr. had to be at least 16, but likely older. He appears on the 1761 tax list for Rowan County, NC, The next available tax record for the area also includes father William and two sons - John and William. He appears on the 1768 tax list for Rowan County, NC, Following the deaths of father William and older brother John, William Jr became head of the household and listed on the 1768 tax record with one slave - Humphrey. He appears on the 1772 tax list for Rowan County, NC, The two remaining sons of William and Eleanor appear for the first time together in 1772. He appears on the 1778 tax list for an unknown place This is the last year that he apparently paid the tax on land as he sold the 419 acres within a year. Like his brother, Morgan and his cousin's son William Linville, this William Linville did not present himself for the oath or affirmation of allegiance, in Aug, 1778. But like his brother Morgan, a verification that he had already taken the oath or affirmation a few months earlier in Surry County is among Morgna manuscript papers. There is some suggestion that William may have struggled either with some illness of mental capacity. As primogenitor heir of his brother's land, he sold it for a large sum of money and the signatures in both parts of the deed are basically scribbles. He never acquired land on his own after this. He sold Samuel Bailey, both of Rowan county, his legacy from his father on on 21 September 1779. With no probate for his father or brother, this deed is the one that definitively places this William as the second oldest son of his father's. The 419 acre parcel with improvements were original granted to his brother John in 1761. Because John died, apparently with no heirs, the land would fall to his William, as their father's second son. This is made clear in the reading of the deed. That fact that the deed is for 3600 pounds NC money suggests money was being raised for some purpose. This is the time that many in the community journeyed to Kentucky, though a number returned a year later. Perhaps this William did that. The scribble, though, for the signature -- very different from that of the William who was his first cousin one removed - separates the two William Linvilles. Eleanor Linvill sold Henry Hendricks these 105 1/2 acres of land for 8 pounds on 29 Jul 1785. It is the same land Hendricks sold a William Linville, who sold it to Evan Ellis in 1805. However, William of Rockcastle County, TN is NOT the same person. The William attached to the land record would have been Eleanor's (or Ellender) son William. That William, Eleanor's son, died in Clark County, KY unmarried. Henry Hendricks sold William Linville, both of Rowan County, NC, 105 1/2 acres on waters of Linvill Creek, on line of Evan Ellis. The metes and bounds make it very clear that this the same land Eleanor Linville sold him. The William Linville attached to this land record would have been Eleanor's son, William, who died in Clark County, KY, unmarried and left an estate, and not another William Linville. Gabriel Enocks and wife Mary sold William Linvill 61 3/4 acres of a track surveyed to Enocks, adjacent Jacob Smith. Because of the proximity of the land to this William Linville's likely other land, the purchase is attributed to this William. This is especially true since Eleanor Linville and her children were all in Clark (then Bourbon) County, KY by this time. This William soon followed and then died in Clark County, KY. He died before 13 September 1799 at Clark County, KY, At the time of his death, he owned no land but his estate inventory includes a sorral mare, one saddle, whiskey, 14 bee hives, 2 waist coats, 2 shirts and linen britches, and a note for several second rate cows, calves and some bushels of salt.

Morgan Linville was born between 1760 and 1765 at Forks of Linville Creek, Rowan County, NC. He appears on the 1772 tax list for Rowan County, NC, Consequently, but 1772, Morgan was at least 21 years to be one of two polls taxed in the William and Morgan household. He appears on the 1778 tax list for Rowan County, NC, with only a poll tax - no land tax. He apparently failed to appear in court to take the oath or affirmation of Allegiance. in August 1778 at Capt Johnson District, Rowan County, NC, to take the oath or affirmation of Allegiance. However, other records indicate that both Morgan and brother William took the oath in Surry County several months earlier. He married Sarah Bryan, daughter of Samuel Bryan and Elizabeth McMahan, on 2 April 1798 at Bourbon County, KY. Morgan Linville died before 11 November 1830 at Clark County, KY. At some time after his death, an interesting group of small scraps of papers that belonged to Morgan Linville was acquired by the University of Kentucky at Louisville. The now digitized materials provide some interesting details and intrigues, but beyond the letters from sister Elizabeth Thompson and one partial one from his aunt and uncle Joseph and Alice (Linville) Bryan do not add any details to the genealogy. There is one reference to a Daniel Linville, who presumably is the father of Dudley Linville (see database), but we know from DNA research that Daniel (or at least Dudley) were not genetic Linvilles on the male side of the family. It appears that Daniel was possibly a young boy taken in by the Linvilles someplace in Kentucky before 1800 and before his marriage to Rhoda Knight.

Regarding George/Ann's children - according to Samuel Boone, George/Ann had 12 children (6 sons and 6 daughters) that all with one exception lived to adulthood. There is some minor confusion on this point. Samuel's list did not include John Linville Boone and listed Nester as the youngest sibling. Ann "Nancy" Linville was born in 1744 at Linville Creek, Augusta County, VA, assumed based on where her father was living about that time. As of 28 November 1764,her married name was Ann 'Nancy' Boone. She married George Boone Sr., son of Squire Boone and Sarah Morgan, on 28 November 1764 at NC. The inscription read: Ann Linville Boone, wife of George Boone, Sen., departed this life 28th day of March, 1814, the mother of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, 182."
