We know the father William was alive when he served as chain carrier in 1754 for a neighbor's survey. And he was either no longer living or not living in NC at the time of the 1759 tax records for the rest of the family. He may have been associated with the geographic places as "Lynville Mountain" and "Lynville Creek" in present-day Franklin County VA. However, no records have been found to suggest this -- only the place names and the term "Linville brothers" on the county's historical map.

     John Linville was born before 1759. He appears on a Rowan County tax record for 1787 with a tax of 9 pds of which he had paid 5 pd, 10 shillings. There is a John Linville in a few records in Rowan County in the 1780s. He cannot be the son of Eleanor and William since their son John died in 1766. Given the (2nd) William in Rowan County, it is possible that this John Linville is his brother. That would mean two sons for William (bc 1735-dc 1758). This John is placed here, though additional research is needed. There are two court records for him and one tax record. He may be the John Linvill is Greenville, South Carolina in 1790. This John Linvill appears in the Rowan County court records when he is asked to bring to court the orphans -- three girls -- of Rodum Bussel. When he next appears in court on 6 Nov 1789 the girls names are given -- Prisly, Elizabeth, and Jenny Bussell. There parents are likely the Rudum Bussell and Charity Smith who took out a marriage license 4 Sept 1767 in Rowan County. The Bondsman were John Turner and Conrelwell Smith. Was John the new husband of Charity? If so, there is no record. And there is no record of the girls after this court date. Is he the John Linville in the 1800 Cenus of Greenville County, South Carolina?
