He and his brother Dan had started a fishing business. Dan and returned to NC for a visit and Ira was killed in a boating accident while Dan was gone. Fowl play was suspected since there were considerable fishing territory disputes occurring and the boat sank unexpectedly in the harbor. He was buried at Goodwill Baptist Church Cemetery, Belews Creek, Forsyth County, NC.
