Julia Carter Linville was born on 21 October 1871 at Richardson Farm, St. Joseph, Platte County, MO. She lived in 1880; Julia was living with James A. Cobb family in Nemaha Co., KS in 1880. She was estranged from the family and may have lived with half sister Eva for a while. As of 29 July 1893,her married name was Julia Carter O'Connell. She married Dennis C. O'Connell on 29 July 1893 at Portland, Multnomah County, OR; Their marriage record indicates that a Simon Cook and the minister were the only witnesses and the marriage took place in the home of the Presbyterian minister, G.H. Woodward. All the family, with the exception of Henry who was finishing up college in Kansas, were in Oregon by this time so they could have attended. Perhaps the choice of spouse has something to do with the distance created between Julia and the rest of the family in Oregon. Julia Carter Linville filed for divorce from Dennis C. O'Connell on 2 April 1907 at Multnomah County Circuit Court, Portland, Multnomah County, OR; Julia cited great mental suffering and anguish from the physical abuse at the hands of husband Dennis. She cited three incidents specifically: in March 1894 when she was pregnant, he struck her, indicating that "every woman should have a licking evry two or three months." In 1900 Julia was "taken quite ill" and required medical treatment. Dennis refused to take her to the hospital and she had to rely on a stranger (Peter Kroenerberg of Powel's Valley, OR) to take her to St. Vincent's Hospital. Finally, on 13 Feb 1907 he physically beat her again, blaming her for the burst water pipes in the family home. He "has a surly and ugly disposition" throughouth their married life and swore at her often (with statements quoted in the petition). Julia Carter Linville and Dennis C. O'Connell were divorced on 29 May 1908 at Portland, Multnomah County, OR. Julia Carter Linville was ill with Hullucinations and mental worry caused by trouble with her husband. before September 1908 at Portland, Multnomah County, OR. The conditions of the couple's divorce provided custody of son Allen Wilbur to the husband and daughter Doris Marie to the wife. Dennis was to build for Julia a five room cottage, pay off a $1000 mortgage and deposit a part of his property in escrow until the obilgation was complete. He was also to pay her $25 per month in alimony. Julia, then destitute and incompetent, learned that Dennis had hidden some assets in California and a suit was filed to recover the community property in Aug 1908 through her lawyer of two years, C.H. Piggott. Then, a Charles Downer entered her life and produced what the lawyer called a hypnotic control over Julia, and through fraud and misrepresentation Julia had deeded Charles Downer (Deed Book 433, p. 199 - 29 Sept 1908) her rights to the property (described as north 1/2 of Lots 1 and 2, and all of Lots 8, 9 and 10 in Block 3 of Howes addition, City of Oregon) due her from Dennis, receiving no consideration in exchange. Houses were being erected on the land although the deed was appealled immediately by Piggot case. Piggot asked that William G. Beck be appointed her guardian, citing no known relatives who can assume responsibity of guardian to keep her estate from eroding while the case is in appeal with the Supreme Court of Oregon. A judgement order was entered by Judge C. U. Gantenbein indicating that the case was dismissed, that C.H. Piggot had no standing to file suit and plaintiffs (the Downers) were to recover court costs from Piggot and Julia. Upon which Piggot appealled the judgement. The State Supreme Court over turned the Circuit Court's position, saying that the Circuit Court did have powers to commit an insame person or at the very least to inquire into the cause or need for a trustee to be appointed. But the case doesn't have any information about what happened to the deed or the money due Julia. Given her borderline existance throughout her life, it seems reasonable to assume she never recovered any of the property or money. She lived in 1912 at 488 Flanders, Portland, Multnomah County, OR. She lived in 1917 at 202 E. Polk - St John's, Portland, Multnomah County, OR; She doesn't appear in the 1915 city directory but in 1917. She was A janitoress in 1920 at 504 Pittsburgh, Portland, Multnomah County, OR. She and Doris Marie O'Connell appeared on the census of 15 January 1920 at Portland, Multnomah County, OR; However, in a strange entry, Julia is listed as a lodger with no occupation in former husband Dennis's house on the 1920 census AND again in a household of her own as a janitor in a woolen mill a few blocks away. Daughter Doris is listed in both places as well. Dennis who is also listed twice in two different enumeration districts, although at the same address, has both children listed with him but not his second wife, Clara, although she was clearly married to Dennis at the time. This seems to be an irregularity in the census enumeration. Julia Carter Linville and Doris Marie O'Connell lived between 1921 and 1925 at 102 1/2 N. Jersey, Portland, Multnomah County, OR. Julia Carter Linville lived in 1926 at A800 Washinton, Portland, Multnomah County, OR. She lived in 1927 at 2101 E. Gilsan, Portland, Multnomah County, OR. She lived in 1928 at 401 1/2 N. Jersey, Portland, Multnomah County, OR. She lived in 1929 at 1402 Fenwick, Portland, Multnomah County, OR; Listed as living with her son, Allen Wilbur O'Connell. She was ill with Mental illness in 1930 at Sedro Woolley, Skagit County, WA. She died on 6 April 1939 at Northern State Hospital, Sedro Woolley, Skagit County, WA, at age 67. She was buried on 8 April 1939 at H. Lemely Mortuary, Mt. Vernon, Skagit County, WA.

Eva lived with her half sister Minnie in Fossil, OR at least for a while before 1919. Minnie's letter about their father's death (dated 26 Oct 1919) says that 'I don't know where Eva is. She left us three years ago and has not written to me since she left...' She died on 12 November 1938 at Burley, ID; Eva's obituary in the Burley, ID newspaper [17 Nov 1938] states: Eva Linville came to Abion in 1908 and taught at the Normal School there, later teaching at Burley High School, Malden, WA High School and the Declo, ID High School, living at Delco since 1915. After retiring from teaching she was a home nurse. Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Minnie Shown of Trineville (sic- Prineville), OR, six nieces and nephes there, and one brother, H.R. Linville of New York City.
She died at the home of Mrs. Nelson on Overland Ave in Burley and had been in poor healt since March. A letter from H.R. Linville indicates that she had cancer surgery (breast?) in Oct and that he paid for the burial, which no one in the family attended.
The services were held at the Burley Presbyterian Church of which she was a member.

Jr., was indicted by a grand jury in Portland on a two count felony for forging a $22 welfare check made out to Lawrence P. Dopp of 68 S.W. Alder, Portland and taken from a local mission. Bail was set at $2500. He plead guilty and was sentenced to 15 years in prison and a $200 fine. served 10 of those years in the federal penitentiary on McNeil Island, Washington. Prison records list no family members. He was 5 feet 7 1/2 inches, 135 lbs., dark brown hair, grey eyes, medium complexion. He was to serve until 27 Sept 1954, but was released 9 July 1949 --either by parole or good behavior--the record is not clear. After his release from prison he apparently returned to Portland, where he was living at 7206 S.W. Virginia Ave at the time of his death in 1961. He was hit by a train, ruled an accident by the coroner, on a railroad trestle in north Portland about 10 p.m. on 4th June. He apparently was not found for three days and then taken to Emanuel Hospital in north Portland and prounced dead on the 7th which is given as his official death date. Cause of death 'Shock & Stress due to Multiple traumatic injuries and exposure.' There are no extant records at the hospital, cororner's office or newspaper accounts to provide more information. He died on 7 June 1961 at Portland, Multnomah County, OR, at age 68; R. B. Linville, Jr. was hit by a train on a railroad bridge in a rural section of north Portland, not far from Emanuel (now Legacy-Emanuel) Hospital, north of Portland Coliseum. He was buried on 12 June 1961 at Riverview Cemetery, Portland, OR; R. B. Linville, Jr. lies in an unmarked grave in this beautiful cemetery overlooking all of eastern Portland and only a few blocks from where he had been living on S.W. Virginia. A brother-in-law who was formerly married to his half-sister, Julia, is buried in another section of the same cemetery.

Adele Miln
F, b. 31 July 1878, d. 11 November 1921
Adele Miln lived between 1878 and 1887; Adele lived with her parents and her brother and sister, first in Brroklyn and then in Chicago until 1887 when her parent divorced. She was born on 31 July 1878 at Brooklyn, New York City, NY. She made a debut Played the young Duke of York in Richard III along with her father, George. in February 1887 at Columbia Theater, Chicago, Cook County, IL. Acted together with her father, George, in Damon and Pythias and Richard III several additional times. Her father, George, was definitely in the throes of an adulterous affair with his leading lady, Louise Jordan, who later became his second wife. Acted again in both productions from the Columbia Theater engagement. She was educated in June 1891 at Washington Middle School, Plainfield, Union County, NJ; For some reason, Adele's report card was consistently signed by her aunt, Martha Shotwell Cadmus and not her mother. Since Josephine's children lived with their aunt, it seems possible that Josephine may have been hospitalized. Adele's journal does not reveal any clues as to why her mother was not signing her report cards. She was educated in September 1891 at St. Nicholas Avenue at 156th, New York City, New York County, NY. She was graduated in June 1895 at St. Nicholas Avenue at 156th, New York City, New York County, NY; Adele was second second on the list of successful candidates for Normal College (later called Hunter College). She was employed by Department of Education, City of New York in 1899 probably as part of her course work at Hunter College. An undated letter written by Mary Howe Nolen on Department of Education stationery asked "My dear Miss Miln" to "please be prepared next Wednesday morning to show the teachers how you adapted 'Marching to Jerusalem' the the playground without chairs. You had chalk circles on the floor. I shall have to trouble you to bring your own chalk and any other portable equipment necessary. Also please bring a list of playground games that are especially successful with small boys. If you do not err, yours is a boys playground so you will have need to plan these carefully for yourself. I do not want to put any extra labor upon you but you are always helpful and willing, so don't fail me." A second letter dated 17 April 1900 (document for graduation), written from Hamilton Gauge School says that she had been a kindergarten assistant. in 1899 at New York City Public Schools, New York City, New York County, NY. She was employed by Adele was a kindergarten teacher. A letter of recommendation says she is "patient, energetic, prompt, strong physically and willing to do hard work. Her methods are up to date. She keeps abreast of the times." between 1900 and 1906 at Somerville Public Schools, Somerville, Somerset County, NJ. She was educated on 6 June 1900 at Hunter College, New York City, New York County, NY. She appeared on the census of 6 June 1900 at 509 West 152nd Street, New York City, New York County, NY; Adele was boarding in the household of veternarian Robert Ellis and his wife Jenevieve along with her sister and Percy L. Shaeffer, Lila's future husband. One of her good friends and colleagues during this period (and perhaps before) was Alice Martin (later Alice Meyer) who was a life-long friend of Adele's children after her death and who is credited with introducing Adele to Henry R. Linville, her future husband, and another teacher whom Alice had met in New York. She was employed by The Board of Education of North Plainfield for an annual salary of $650. in September 1907 at Somerset School, North Plainfield, Somerset County, NJ. She and Dr. Henry Richardson Linville were engaged on 22 October 1907 at Plainfield, Union County, NJ. Adele Miln married Dr. Henry Richardson Linville, son of Richard Baxter Linville and Emma Richardson, on 9 June 1908 at New York City, NY; Married at the Ethical Culture Society on Central Park in Manhatten. There were no known pictures from the wedding which is strange since Adele was quite a documentor. It is possible the pictures were later destroyed by Henry's second wife. Adele's sister and brother-in-law werre the witnesses. It is assumed there wer others in attendance as they had a close knit group of friends, one of whom, Alice Martin (later Meyers), who had introduced them and was a life-long friend of her daughter Rhoda. As of 9 June 1908,her married name was Adele Linville. Adele Miln published Adele Miln Linville's story of "Mr. and Mrs. Hands", about a clock family, was published in Little Folks (Salem: MA) magazine in Dec 1909. The editor commented, "We this it one of the best articles we have ever published in the Play Department" and asked her to submit other manuscripts. The story, about the clock which then consisted of Roman numerals, was to have been published as a children's book at some point, but with the switch to Arabic numerals on clocks, the cleverness of the story no longer worked. Since this is the same magazine Adele's step-mother (who never acknowledged her) published stories in ten years earlier, it is intriguing to wonder whether Louise J. Miln read it and recognized the author. in December 1909 at Salem, MA. Adele was president of the Jamaica Women's Suffrage organization. She and Dr. Henry Richardson Linville appeared on the census of 1920 at Queens, Queens County, NY. Adele Miln died on 11 November 1921 at Bronx County, NY, at age 43; The cause of death was breast cancer. She had been a patient at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx for over four months. She had had surgery two years earlier for the removal of one breast but there was a recurrence of the cancer by June 1921. For a while in June of that year she was cared for as an outpatient and stayed with Charlotte Perkins Gilman, a famous early 20th century feminist, on the upper west side of Manhattan. The family continued to live, however, at their home on Jamaica Terrace in Jamaica, NY. Her death was very traumatic for all four children. She was buried on 23 November 1921 at Kew Gardens, Queens County, NY.

Dennis C. O'Connell
M, b. 1861, d. 19 August 1937
Dennis C. O'Connell was born in 1861 at Buffalo, NY. He was Real estate contractor and operator before 1888 at Buffalo, Erie County, NY. He moved at Portland, OR, in 1888. He married Julia Carter Linville, daughter of Richard Baxter Linville and Emma Richardson, on 29 July 1893 at Portland, Multnomah County, OR; Their marriage record indicates that a Simon Cook and the minister were the only witnesses and the marriage took place in the home of the Presbyterian minister, G.H. Woodward. All the family, with the exception of Henry who was finishing up college in Kansas, were in Oregon by this time so they could have attended. Perhaps the choice of spouse has something to do with the distance created between Julia and the rest of the family in Oregon. Dennis C. O'Connell was Carpenter between 1894 and 1905 at Portland, Multnomah County, OR. He and Julia Carter Linville were divorced on 29 May 1908 at Portland, Multnomah County, OR. Dennis C. O'Connell married Clara R. (?) on 26 January 1909 at Portland, Multnomah County, OR. Dennis C. O'Connell died on 19 August 1937 at Portland Sanitarium, Portland, Multnomah County, OR. He was buried on 23 August 1937 at Riverview Cemetery, Portland, Multnomah County, OR. His estate was probated on 26 August 1937 at Multnomah County Circuit Court, Portland, Multnomah County, OR; Bequests were made as follows: wife Clara R. O'Connell during her lifetime 1/2 of net income from all real property; to daughter Doris O'Connell Owley, $50 a month but only after Clara dies and only to a total of $5000; to son Allen O'Connell all real and personal property and the management thereof; subject to income payments bequeathed. Allen was executor. Appraisal of the property amounted to $54,250. But, the probate of the estate became a complicated matter. Clara sued for a deed to 1/2 the property and took all the proceeds in rent without paying the taxes, maintenance and upkeep. Allen placed the property (Alder Crest Apartments, 2934 S.E. Alder Street, Portland) under the trust of Portland Trust until 1939 when Allen took over the management. Clara claimed the apartment (#1) which she and Dennis had lived in for 10 years before his death as a homestead, waiving provisions in the will for her to proceed with law suit. The court sided with Clara and divided the apartments in two. The result was that none of the payments of mortgage were made and the Portland Bank and Trust took over the management again in late 1939. When the final accounting was completed 6 June 1942, the estate was insolvent because the estate property had been lost in a mortgage foreclosure in Rankin v. O'Connell, et al, #138-566, Circuit Court of Multnomah County.
